Dane J. Dunford, a young Star Wars enthusiast whose courage during a battle with cancer touched his family and the Liberty Center, Ohio, community, died at home on the evening of March 15, 2016. He was six years old.
Dane was born on April 23, 2009, in Wauseon, Ohio, to Jeffrey Dunford and Janey (Allen) Dunford. He was a first-grade student at Liberty Center Schools, where his story inspired people to come together to create special memories during his final months.
A Brave Fight Against Childhood Cancer
Dane was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, when he was five. He underwent nine months of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the cancer.
Unfortunately, the disease returned in early December. After attempting another round of chemotherapy, Dane and his family made the difficult decision to stop treatment so they could focus on spending meaningful time together.
Despite the challenges he faced, Dane experienced several memorable adventures with the support of loved ones and people who wanted to make his remaining time special.
Dreams Made Possible Through Love and Community
Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Dane had the opportunity to visit Disney World. He also spent time with friends in Bloomington, Indiana, and visited relatives and friends in Utah.
His hometown community helped fulfil another special dream by arranging opportunities for him to meet some of his favourite Star Wars heroes. Dane also got to experience being a scientist for a day, creating memories that his loved ones could treasure.
His love of Star Wars became a lasting part of his story. For those who remember him, the image of Dane as a little Jedi represents the courage and spirit he showed while facing a serious illness at such a young age.
